Handscript copy of Benjamin Franklin Dowell's journal and letter related to overland journey from St. Joseph, Missouri (May 21, 1850) to Sacramento, California (September 15, 1850). Journal describes the death of two friends from cholera and his adoption of five orphaned girls on trail. Letter (September 27, 1850) briefly mentions the great hardships experienced during his westward migration.

Dowell moved to Portland, Oregon in 1850, and then to Jackson in 1852, finally moving back to Portland in 1855. He took part in the Rogue River Indian War in 1853 and the Yakima War in 1855. He operated a pack train from Wilamette Valley to the gold mines and bought and edited the Oregon Sentinel.
